Monday 18th July Baderitz to Bayreuth
A short drive down the road we came to our next destination for spending quality tourist dollars and that was Colditz Castle. After all our visits to Hitler’s other WWII exhibits, it was only just that we should visit a camp that had contained prisoners of war. Colditz is probably the most notable because it supposedly had a good record of failed escapes and is most documented in film and book form. The prisoners held here had either tried to escape from other POW camps or were considered of high intelligence; no doubt this is why Sir Charles Upham, VC and Bar, was held here.
His picture graces the walls of the British wing, along with another NZer. We took a two hour guided tour in English and heard stories of how they lived, but mostly heard tales about various escapes, it all sounded much like Hogan Heroes to me, including the escape side, the underground network and the bribing of the guards, maybe Colonel Shultz really did exist?
Having come to the end of my semi organised tour plan we decided to stock up on fuel and food and do some impulsive sightseeing. Having not included the Romantic Road in the original plan, because its journey down the centre of Germany didn’t fit with the overall direction we were travelling, we decided to spend the next few days exploring some of the towns and cities on the scenic romantic road.
To start the journey we have come to Bayreuth, camping in the car park of Sauna/Spa complex with quite a few others, we just managed to squeeze into a slot with power. Today and yesterday’s drive took us through more forest roads which have an interesting feature. On every bend or area of gradient are little boxes on the side of the road that are filled with grit to throw on the road when conditions are icy, no need today as the temperature headed into the 30’s. ..
