Saturday 2nd of July Konstanz to Besenwirtschaft
Sleeping in a car park in the centre of town is not ideal when it also doubles as the main bus terminal for the masses.
We set off today to see an island in the lake that you can drive on via a causeway. Reichenau Island once had a monastery on it, but now it just has acres of market gardens and many tourists, most of whom arrive from Konstanz by ferry. We went further around the western side of the lake calling in to various small towns to see if there were any decent events/markets happening as the tourist attractions weren’t really dragging us in at 18 euros each to see a garden and 9 euro for a house on stilts or a museum with parts of 'the' Zeppelin, which we assume are very small parts.
We found only one market and then we arrived at Meersburg for lunch and what a shock, we actually turned up at a town at the same time as a festival. Normally they have lots of tourist shops but today they also have their Winzerfest which just involves band music, tables set up like a beerfest and stalls selling large beers and plates of large bland looking sausage; we opted for the pomme frites and Kirsch and Pistachio ice cream.
The lake is quite high and rough at the moment, lapping up on the shore near houses, so today’s camp will definitely be on higher ground. Our parking place tonight is on the way to Ravensburg on somebody’s farm. I would ask the lady her name but she has absolutely no English. Everything was communicated in combination German and sign language on her part and nodding and English on mine. I have no idea what I have agreed to but she didn’t want my money, I’m hoping it’s not one of these “work for your board” farms.
